McDaniel Avenue Bridge Closing July 6, Detour Planned Earlier this year, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) lowered the weight limit on the McDaniel Avenue Bridge after an inspection of the bridge revealed extensive corrosion on the existing steel beams. The weight restriction was a temporary measure until SCDOT could secure an emergency contract to replace the bridge.
The SCDOT bridge replacement project is scheduled to begin in July and take approximately six months to complete. During that time, the City of Greenville will also replace the sewer main located underneath the bridge to increase capacity for the south downtown area.
The McDaniel Avenue Bridge will be closed beginning July 6, and the section of McDaniel Avenue between the bridge and Cleveland Street will be open to local traffic only. All other traffic will be routed around the closure via the following detours:
- Motorists traveling northbound on McDaniel Avenue will turn left on Cleveland Street, continue on Cleveland to Ridgeland Drive, turn right on Ridgeland Drive and continue on Ridgeland to McDaniel Avenue
- Motorists traveling southbound on McDaniel Avenue will turn right on Ridgeland Drive, continue on Ridgeland to Cleveland Street, turn left on Cleveland Street and continue on Cleveland to McDaniel Avenue

The section of the Swamp Rabbit Trail that goes under the McDaniel Avenue Bridge will also be closed beginning July 6. Trail traffic will be diverted around the closure via a new trail extension.
The scope of the SCDOT project includes adding new structural supports, replacing the bridge deck and installing new railings. The existing abutments, or retaining walls, at either end of the bridge will remain and the vehicle lanes and sidewalk on the new bridge deck will be the same width as they are now.
General timeline of the work that will take place during the six-month closure: - July 6 - July 21: Utility relocation
- July 21: Removal of tree from project area
- July 25 - Nov 30: Bridge demolition and reconstruction
- Nov 30 - Dec 20: Remaining sewer installation outside of bridge area
- End of December: Bridge reopens
